Abstract

Crohn’s disease (CD) is a lifelong debilitating condition. Different theories have been proposed regarding the aetiology of the disease like genetic factors, microbial factors and in recent years there is increased interest in the role of Mycobacterium in this disease. The high global incidence of this disease has been reported. The disease was rare till 1980s in India, however, past few decades has seen an increased prevalence. Presently available treatment offers symptomatic relief. Surgery is suggested in advance cases. However, frequent relapses of the disease have been observed. Therefore, therapeutic development for CD is a hot area of research and many new avenues are being explored. Here we review the classical and modern advances in managing this disease.
