Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the antiulcer activity of leaves of Parkinsonia acculeata in rats. Parkinsonia acculeata (Leguminosae) is a commonly used plant in Southern region of Maharashtra as a traditional medicine. In the present study anti-ulcer activity of its petroleum ether and aqueous extracts of leaves were investigated using animal models. All extracts were subjected to phytochemical analysis and their toxic potential. Petroleum ether extract was found to contain steroids, flavonoids and Spectroscopy studies revealed presence of prostaglandin, aqueous extract revealed the presence of flavonoids and alkaloids. Parkinsonia acculeata pet ether and aqueous extracts were found to be non-toxic up to 5000 mg/kg dose after single dose administration of the extracts. During study of the claimed anti-ulcer activity, treatment with petroleum ether and aqueous extracts showed significant reduction in ulcer index in alcohol treated rats.
