Abstract
Background: The Department of Radiodiagnosis and Imaging plays a vital role in hospital-based patient care by offering essential diagnostic services to various clinical specialties. This study aimed to assess the demographic and clinical profile of patients undergoing MRI and CT scans at a major tertiary care teaching hospital. Materials and Methods: A prospective study was conducted over one year at Melmaruvathur Adhiparasakthi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Melmaruvathur, Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu, to evaluate the patient utilization patterns of MRI and CT scan services.
Results: A total of 7,171 patients underwent imaging, comprising 1,282 MRI and 5,889 CT scan procedures. Notably, head CT scans accounted for the majority (60.4%) of all CT scans performed, underscoring their clinical relevance. A significant proportion of scans yielded positive findings, with 72.1% in CT Abdomen, 82.9% in CT Chest, and 80% in MRI. Conclusion: The findings indicated that a majority of MRI and CT scans revealed positive diagnostic results, reinforcing the value of these imaging modalities as essential diagnostic tools in a tertiary care hospital setting.
