Abstract

Drug-drug and drug-food interactions occur when the effects of one drug are modified by the simultaneous use of another drug or the intake of food orally. The clinical outcomes are influenced by various factors, including individual patient characteristics such as age, co-existing conditions, diet, and pharmacogenetics. The prevalence of drug-drug and drug-food interaction in an orthopedics department of clinical interventions by clinical pharmacists in a tertiary care hospital. This Prospective study was carried out from December 2019, among osteoporosis inpatient wards of the government tertiary care hospital and outpatient clinic of a private hospital at Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri. A total of 340 orthopaedics department prescriptions were assessed drug-drug and drug-food interaction prospectively in the tertiary care hospital. A total of 1489 drugs were prescribed with 4.3 drugs being prescription. The drug commonly prescribed more than two drugs was 144 (42%) followed by one drug prescribed was found to be 13 (4%) and polypharmacy >5 medications present in our prescriptions reported was 51 (15%) respectively. This study helps identify the factors associated with DDIs and drug-food interaction in the orthopaedic department for osteoporosis patients and it might helpful in the safe and effective use of drugs in hospitalized patients.
